About the Role
As a Consultant Microbiologist, you will join an established team providing a comprehensive microbiology and infection service to Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary and the wider community.
You will work closely with Consultant colleagues, Infection Prevention & Control teams, Antimicrobial Stewardship leads, and multidisciplinary clinical teams to support safe, effective patient care across acute and community settings.
The role offers opportunities to develop specialist interests, contribute to service development, and play a key part in shaping microbiology and infection services within a modern, well‑equipped laboratory environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide consultant‑level clinical microbiology advice to hospital and community clinicians
- Lead and participate in infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, and outbreak management
- Support diagnostic microbiology services, including interpretation of complex results
- Attend and contribute to MDTs, governance meetings, and clinical advisory groups
- Supervise and support junior doctors, trainees, and laboratory staff

What we’re Looking For
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Medical Microbiology / Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
- UK Right to Work
- DBS/PVG check (or willingness to complete)
Desirable:
- Experience in infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, or laboratory leadership
- Interest in developing a recognised subspecialty area
- Experience contributing to teaching, audit, or service development
